The Waldo Skillin elementary school in South Portland is the site of the Learning Gardens Project. Anne Cyr, who is a first grade teacher and also a master gardener, was inspired to create the gardens because she believes children need to become better acquainted with our natural world.
“It has become my passion the last few years to encourage a love of nature in children, and this led to the creation of the Learning Gardens Project. Just this afternoon I watched a child leave the noisy playscape area, wander out to the garden, and stretch out on a boulder, looking skyward. It made my heart sing!” shares Anne.
